Media comment: Budget announcement

Published on:

20 March 2020

Commenting on the Budget Nick Hill, money expert at the Money and Pensions Service.

“The government has announced changes to the way statutory sick pay works for people who contract coronavirus or have to miss work as they have been advised to self-isolate. Your rights depend on your employment status and earnings. If you’re an employee, you should be entitled to statutory sick pay from the first day you are off work. It’s always worth checking your contract, staff handbook or with your employer about your sick pay entitlements.

“If you are self-employed or earn under the minimum amount needed to receive statutory sick pay, you may be able to claim Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit.”
