Debt advice quality

The MaPS Standards set out the core principles for the effective delivery, quality and performance requirements of our debt advice functions, as well as for organisations working with us.

Working with the debt advice sector, we have created a debt advice quality framework. Our aim is to maintain high standards within debt organisations, as well as individuals supporting clients on the frontline.

We accredit training courses and qualifications that meet the standards set out in our debt advice quality framework. This allows practitioners to find suitable learning opportunities that are recognised as high quality.

We work in partnership with the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) to publish the Debt Advice Handbook. This is a fully online resource with up-to-date technical debt information to support advisers across a range of topics. The 16^th edition was released in 2026.

We fund the Specialist Debt Advice Service (SDAS), which is provided by Shelter. This is a free advice line and webchat which allows debt advisers to get specialist help and guidance with complex cases.
